Managing Open Positions and Live P&L

How to read your open positions and real time profit and loss on the Trade terminal, close positions, and attach Take Profit and Stop Loss brackets to protect them.

~2 min read Last reviewed: July 13, 2026

Your open positions and their real time profit and loss live on the Trade terminal. Every position updates automatically as prices move, and you can close or protect any of them right from that screen.

Reading your open positions

Each open position appears on the Trade terminal with its symbol, side, size, and live profit and loss. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Live P&L is unrealized. It compares the current market price to your entry and changes tick by tick while the market is open.
  • Real time market data drives these updates. All paid challenge plans include it, and every free paper account gets a 7 day real time market data trial. See the Pricing page for what your plan includes.
  • Outside market hours, values reflect the last session until the market reopens.

Closing a position

  1. On the Trade terminal, open the close dialog for the position.
  2. Review the position details and place your exit.

The order ticket supports market, limit, and stop orders, so you can exit whichever way fits your plan. Once a position is closed it moves to your trading history on the Activity page, where you can review orders, fills, and closed positions.

Protecting a position with brackets

From the same close dialog you can attach Take Profit and Stop Loss brackets that auto exit the position at a chosen percent, dollar, or price level. This lets you respect your account rules without watching every tick.

Remember that each account carries limits such as a maximum position hold time and a maximum allocation risk per position. These vary by plan and are shown on your account and on the Pricing page, so review them before you size up.

If a value looks stale

A blank or frozen chart, or a P&L that stops moving, is almost always a temporary data or connection issue rather than a lost position. Switch symbols and back, refresh the page, and check your market data status. If it persists, email [email protected] and we will take a look.

Keep an eye on your live P&L, lean on brackets to stay inside your rules, and your positions stay under control.
